Yes, this is an excellent example where the equilibrium assumption (more than mass-flux modelling) fails. By large ice caps in strong disequilibrium (I.e. still reacting to past changes) these methods overestimate thickness in the lower parts... Time for time-dwpendent modelling!

Note that although the term "apparent mass-balance" is widespread and theoretically accounts for this, none of the models in Farinotti et al 2018 deals with this in a sensible manner. Including OGGM - we are just a bit more direct and just assume that we assume equilibrium ;-)

edu.oggm.org is an #interactive platform to #learn and #teach about #glaciers. We started OGGM-Edu as the "educational branch" of OGGM, but nowadays we see the project as largely independent and useful on its own. Why do we hope that it can be useful to you? 1/n
2020-06-13 17:57:44 ID=1271849247017762818
OGGM-Edu offers "hands-on" and practical activities, but only very little textbook content: we see the platform as an interactive complement to existing (and awesome) resources such as antarcticglaciers.org (@AntarcticGlacie) 2/n

Therefore, OGGM-Edu does not attempt to be a "one stop shop" for all things related to glaciers: our target groups are #instructors and independent learners. For example, OGGM-Edu was used by @LizzUltee to teach a week-long workshop in Peru with @CdeCPeru. 3/n

1/ Let's use glaciers to learn something about the relationship between average precipitation and temperature today! ❄️🏔️🌡️

The video below is realized with OGGM-Edu's "World Glacier Explorer" app: edu.oggm.org/en/latest/expl…

#education #glaciers #climate #AcademicChatter
2020-09-26 16:41:24 ID=1309880760304836614
2/ Where are the typical locations where glaciers receive most precipitation?
2020-09-26 16:41:26 ID=1309880771289776128
3/ Mainly:
- in the mid-latitudes storm track: New Zealand, Patagiona, western North-America, Norway...
- in the Monsoon influenced eastern Himalayas

These locations receive a lot of precipitation - Patagonia and north-eastern India are probably the wettest places on Earth!
2020-09-26 16:41:28 ID=1309880779753893890
4/ We also see that these "wet" glaciers are found where it is warmest. Why?

We'll come back to this, but from a glacier's perspective, this makes sense: more ice melts where it is warmer 🤒, but glaciers can subsist if this is compensated by a lot of snow accumulation ❄️
2020-09-26 16:41:31 ID=1309880791242084355
5/ Now, let's turn this around and select the glaciers located at the coldest locations on Earth, below -20°C average temperature 🥶 Where are these located?
2020-09-26 16:41:33 ID=1309880798334648334
6/ Mainly:
- the Northern Latitudes: Arctic Canada, North Greenland, Russian Arctic
- high mountains in the Karakoram (Himalayas)

You will find colder locations in continental Antarctica for example, but there are no "mountain glaciers" there, only the ice sheet.
2020-09-26 16:41:34 ID=1309880804651216896
7/ Interestingly, the coldest glaciers are also the ones receiving much less precipitation than the world average! Why?
2020-09-26 16:41:42 ID=1309880838037831687
8/ This is one consequence of the famous
Clausius–Clapeyron relation 🧐

Cold air can hold less water vapour than warm air -> cold regions such as Antarctica and the Arctic are also "deserts", but cold ones. Clausius–Clapeyron also explains why warmer glaciers are also wetter.
2020-09-26 16:41:46 ID=1309880855016374272

@EGU_TCThe Cryosphere
Some of the world's #glaciers experience "surges" during which they are flowing much faster than usual and can advance dramatically, posing a threat to downstream infrastructures. Here is a surge observed from space (source: @EGU_TC tc.copernicus.org/articles/9/220…) 1/n
2020-11-06 18:01:45 ID=1324773984228024320
We can use OGGM-Edu's app to simulate a surging event. Starting from an idealized glacier in equilibrium with climate (here in blue), we switch basal sliding on (i.e. the glacier starts "slipping" on the bedrock, very much like a true surging event). Here is what happens: 2/n
2020-11-06 18:01:46 ID=1324773989684830209
🧐 Looking at the graphs: this idealized glacier advanced 5 km in 10 years, the first year almost 700 m/year. Because it is thinner and reaches lower in the valley, the glacier melts faster than usual and looses volume (although it is still advancing!!!) 3/n
2020-11-06 18:01:54 ID=1324774019648933888
At the end of a surging event, basal sliding usually stops. This has another counter-intuitive effect: glacier retreat! This is a result of previous mass loss and the slowdown of mass transport from the top. Only after some time, the glacier recovers to its initial state. 4/n

"Warm" glaciers are mostly located in coastal areas of SA and NA and in NZ. Because of the maritime climate, these glaciers also see a lot of precipitation!

Another way to look at it: glaciers with lots of melt 🌡️need lots of precipitation 🌨️ to compensate!

@matthias_hussMatthias Huss
🚀 v1.5 is out! The highlight is definitely the addition of #glacier #runoff outputs.

We have taken this opportunity to write a new OGGM-Edu #notebook: oggm.org/oggm-edu-noteb…

We reproduce the seminal figure by @matthias_huss in their 2018 paper!

Follow this 🧵for more! 1/
2021-05-21 10:35:15 ID=1395674539657420801
We set the scene by letting the Hintereisferner Glacier (Austria) grow to equilibrium, at a larger size than today. Unfortunately, we learn on the way that a much cooler climate than today is necessary to grow the glacier or even sustain it to today's levels... 2/
2021-05-21 10:35:16 ID=1395674544350932994
Contrary to what one may think, a glacier in equilibrium (neither advancing nor shrinking) has a net annual water contribution of exactly zero. However, it does shift the seasonal contribution quite a bit, by storing water in winter and releasing it in the melt season. 3 /
2021-05-21 10:35:17 ID=1395674548570365952
Now let apply a climate change scenario to our "healthy" glacier. With a warming of 2.5°C over 150 years, we are not so far from what has been observed in the Alps since 1850. In this scenario, the glacier is loosing about 90% of its volume. 4/
2021-05-21 10:35:18 ID=1395674552856944643
Now what happens during this retreat? Runoff increases as the glacier looses mass (it becomes a net contributor). The sources of runoff also change, as liquid precipitation and snow melt increases in areas that were previous glaciated ("off-glacier"). 5/
2021-05-21 10:35:19 ID=1395674556954710017
As the glacier vanishes, it's contribution to runoff declines, and this although the climate is still warming. This happens because there is simply not enough ice to melt anymore... 6/
2021-05-21 10:35:20 ID=1395674561853657090
At the end, when the climate stabilizes, the glacier contribution is zero again. Exactly how started, so nothing changed right???

Unfortunately, something changed: we observe a shift from late- to early-summer contribution, as ice melt is replaced by spring snow melt. 7/
2021-05-21 10:35:21 ID=1395674566375219201
@matthias_hussMatthias Huss
Wrapping-up, we can reproduce the figure by @matthias_huss based on these simulations. "Peak water", and lower glacier contribution during the melt season are some of the many negative impacts of glacier retreat worldwide. 8/

The annual temperature of the SH glaciers is distributed around 0°C with a smaller part of them being colder than -5°C. Their annual precipitation has a very wide equal distribution from 200 to 6000 mm/year. This shows the big differences in glaciers on the SH!

The OGGM-Edu website just got upgraded! @LizzUltee wrote two class activities based on the oggm-edu interactive apps "Glacier Gallery" and "World Glacier Explorer". You can check them out here (edu.oggm.org/en/latest/clas…), and here is a short summary 👇
2022-06-28 18:53:46 ID=1541842307644891137
In the "What Makes a Glacier?" lab activity, students are challenged to define what a glacier is, how it differs from other parts of the cryosphere (such as sea ice), and what kinds of glaciers there are in the world.

For example, are these objects glaciers or not?
2022-06-28 18:53:48 ID=1541842313521029122
The lab continues with different glacier types, and examples from all over the world with the glacier gallery.

edu.oggm.org/en/latest/gall…
2022-06-28 18:53:49 ID=1541842318210236417
In the "Exploring glacier data" lab activity, students are invited to explore glacier data available online, from the World Glacier Monitoring Service and from the OGGM-Edu World Glacier Explorer app. They address three main questions:
2022-06-28 18:53:50 ID=1541842323260178432
Where are there glaciers on Earth today, and why?

What determines how large they are today—and therefore how much they can contribute to sea level rise?

And how do glaciologists keep track of all this?
2022-06-28 18:53:51 ID=1541842325994934274
If you are a teacher at university or high school level and looking for introductory activities for your glaciology or geography classes, check these out!

We hope it as well, but it is not looking good for the glacier 😟

Observations say ~2.5% annual volume loss for the period 2000-2020, with extreme years like 2003 and 2018 at 5%. Of course it will depend on future climate, but a range of 10-15 years for 50% seems plausible...
